This was obviously created in situ. Huge electrical arcs impinging on the surface in the not so distant past. Just imagine what our ancestors witnessed. How they were filled with terror at these ultra-powerful events! Modern man has created fairy tales to feel more in control and safe. The Earth is just a small cathode in a universal electric circuit.
